Probably I'm a minority, but I'd love a Halo with less at stake, and more exploration and world building.Ī post-war game about small group of stranded Spartans and/or marines (I'm thinking about Gray Team here specifically), moving around the galaxy on a prowler between places like the Rubble, Sangheilos, Reach, etc. The Covenant war lasted 30 years before resolving, these conflicts put the bar arguably higher in a matter of months. ![]() Infinite, we have yet another galaxy wide threat with an enemy "worse than the Flood", all while the UNSC has been basically erased by Cortana's Guardians and the Infinity is apparently lost. Halo 5, Cortana gains access to the Domain and has the power to end entire worlds (as seen with Doisac in Infinite) with the Guardians. Halo 4, a forerunner demigod awakens and swiftly comes to Earth with a weapon capable of "killing" a major city in a matter of minutes. I'm going to give my opinion on a bit of your post: "after the Covenant War ended and humanity was no longer on the verge of extinction " I wish! I believe that after the og trilogy stakes got high so fast it's ridiculous. ![]() And if that's the case, they picked the wrong source to adapt. Maybe the showrunners figured that Alien antagonists would be too outlandish to be taken seriously by a wider audience. All of them have mostly human antagonists. I think part of comes from the fact that's it's just easier to write human villains, especially cartoonishly evil ones like the show has.Īnd I think part of it comes from the writers trying to imitate other popular scifi IPs. And only now, three quarters of the way in are they establishing the Covenant as a major threat. They spent most of the show trying so hard to establish the UNSC as the big bad of the show, even though its set at the height of the Covenant War. The show on the other hand has gotten it all backwards. It didn't always work perfectly, but more often than not it was well executed It made sense from a story telling perspective to bring attention to things that would have been brushed under the rug during the war. After the Covenant War ended and humanity was no longer on the verge of extinction, we had a chance to look at humanities decisions in retrospect and see what fucked up things humanity is capable of when desperate. I understand why they went that direction for the main canon. Now theres an "actually" for just about everything I apologize for the heavy dose of salt but you basically cant talk about any human accomplishment in halo anymore in a positive light. No "Humanity! Fuck yeah!" when thats what Halo used to be all about. Is anyone else bothered or fatigued by this? There's almost zero pride left in extended lore. I just genuinely dont get it, Halos story and tone has been completely derailed from being a triumphant tale of human tenacity to a sour, miserable tale where actually no one is happy, humans suck, the covenant should have won etc. An entirely ethnic group of indigenous peoples fights rightously against satanically evil nazi human government forces and the genocidal aliens dont even matter. The TV show makes even less sense and is bordering on parody. ACTUALLY THE UNSC WAS DEPLOYING ORBITAL DROP RAPE TROOPERS TO EVERY INSURRECTIONIST PLANET" this is hyperbole but its really gone to extremes, for reasons I dont understand at all ACTUALLY ONI WANTED TO GENOCIDE THE ELITES. Jump forward to now and its "ACTUALLY HALSEY BLEW UP A TRUCK FULL OF BABIES. ![]() Theres an entire extra about chief meeting someone he used to know but not being able to reveal his identity. Flash clones were frowned upon in the book they were itroduced in.in 2001. Its not even as if the eye raising actions werent already addressed. The human covenant war lasted 30 years, costed 15 billion human lives and dozens of planets.ģ43?Microsoft etc has tried for nearly ten years, 3 games and a dozen books to rewrite ONI in to a cartoonishly evil Nazi CIA and the insurrectionists in to the Resistance from Star Wars and it just doesnt work. Why is 343/Microsoft/whoever is in charge of overall intrigue/development so obsessed with this angle? "Actually Spartans are bad" is never, ever going to be more interesting than an existential war against genocidal, zealot aliens that murder ever last human they can find.
